This damsafetyaction.org website is part of an outreach and communications program produced as an information and educational source for dam owners and the public. The program's purpose is to assist dam safety officials in the Missouri Department of Natural Resources in reaching a goal of 100 percent completion of Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) on state-regulated dams categorized as High-Hazard Potential (HHP), meaning a breach would threaten loss of life and extensive property damage.

Currently Missouri has 5,099 dams, of which 1,588 are HHP, and of those 1,072 are not required by state law to have an EAP. State regulations cover only 685 dams, 468 of which are HHP. Of those 468 dams, Missouri has now achieved EAPs on more than 330 through an award-winning DNR initiative to create inundation maps for HHP dams and then work with dam owners to complete EAPs. DNR’s goal is to complete EAPs for the remaining HHP dams during 2015.

The DamSafetyAction.org website and outreach program is part of an initiative by the National Dam Safety Review Board and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to assist states with significant numbers of HHP dams in their efforts to achieve greater compliance on EAPs.
