Why an EAP is a Guideline and a Lifeline

This brochure was developed for the public and contains basic information about Emergency Actions Plans and High-Hazard Potential dams. It is suitable to hand out at meetings, fairs, and other events where there may be interest in learning about EAPs. This is a two-page, eight-panel brochure that prints on a legal size sheet (8.5 x 14 inches) and folds down to a size that fits in a #10 envelope.

FEMA Living with Dams: Know Your Risk

Living With Dams: Know Your Risks is a booklet designed to help answer questions about dams: what purposes they serve, associated risks, guidance for those living near dams, and where to find further information. The booklet provides a general overview of dams and dam safety, and answers the following questions:

1. Why should I care about dams?
2. What are the risks associated with dams?
3. Could I be affected by a dam? What is the dam failure flood inundation area?
4. Once I determine that my property is in a dambreak inundation area, what's next? ASDSO wishes to thank FEMA and the National Dam Safety Program for providing a grant to produce this product.

Most people know that levees are built near rivers and lakes to reduce flooding risk, but what does it mean to live behind one? Are your home and loved ones safe from floods? How much protection does the levee really provide? What do you need to know to be safe?

This American Society of Civil Engineers' public education booklet, was created to answer those questions and more, and to help individuals and communities better protect themselves against future flood threats. Written for both the engineering and non-engineering public, it covers issues such as flood size and risk, signs of trouble, ways to reduce risk, and how to prepare for and respond to emergencies.

Inundation Maps Make Emergency Action Plans for Dams More Effective

This brochure was developed for dam owners, emergency responders, and the public. It explains the importance of inundation maps in making EAPs more complete and effective. The brochure also explains how some states are using advanced geospatial software and topographical data to create maps for every High-Hazard Potential dam in the state. This PDF of the brochure has a layout for ease of reading. This 145-page document is informative for dam owners, emergency managers, and the public regarding the importance of inundation mapping as part of a comprehensive Emergency Action Plan. It provides dam safety professionals with guidance on how to prepare dam breach inundation modeling studies and conduct mapping that can be used for multiple purposes, including dam safety, hazard mitigation, consequence evaluation, and emergency management including developing EAPs. This guidance is intended to provide a consistent approach that can be applied across the nation.
